Salvatore Ferragamo’s new headquarters is in Sesto Fiorentino and was designed by Beta Progetti. The building houses operational and management offices, forming part of a broader business plan adopted by this top-end luxury brand. The design, based on a desire to combine minimal environmental impact with advanced technology, seeks to mirror the brand’s classic contemporary image.

Rising four floors, plus a basement level, the volume is regular, with clearly defined proportions. Reception is on the first floor, along with service areas, a 90-seater meeting hall and warehouse space. The upper three floors are used for offices, overlooking the green courtyard where staff can meet, interact and draw inspiration, especially the company’s creative designers.

The roof is a green system that aids thermal insulation and reduces the impact of pollution, while the building’s metal frame doubles as support for the photovoltaic system.

The composition of the façades is a modern reinterpretation of the horizontal three section layout of old Florentine buildings, with a base section, piano nobile (main section) and cornice.

On the ground floor (base), a ventilated wall is clad with a pattern of cotto panels and grey sunscreen slats. The piano nobile, actually consisting of three floors for the offices, is characterized by a continuous glazed façade with a sunscreen. The latter is made of a white honeycomb aluminum grid with a triangular cross-section and it defines the geometry of the building on the four elevations. The roof level (cornice) sees a continuation of the shading system and embeds the supporting frame for the photovoltaic installation.

On the second floor, a glazed walkway connects the new office block to the rest of the plant.

The walkway, the metal carpentry and the envelope were the work of Promo, which oversaw development, production and installation. The actual installation of the sunscreen was based on a thorough material, manufacturing and technological analysis that was conducted in conjunction with Beta Progetti and Arup. The original idea was to use fiber reinforced concrete, but at the end of the day honeycomb aluminum was chosen because of its combination of aesthetics and mechanical performance, durability and lightness, a key requirement in engineering the anchoring system for the sunscreens to the structural load-bearing elements of the glass façade.

The astute, advanced and highly technological design, the choice of materials, and the accuracy in execution were determining factors in earning Platinum Leed Certification.
