The Wine Ayutthaya: A Sense of totality

The Wine Ayutthaya is situated along the banks of Chao Phraya River in the Ayutthaya Province, Thailand. The building was design for the purpose of wine drinking and relaxation. Moreover, to create a new tourist attraction and boost the economics of suburban Ayutthaya, a World Heritage Site of a four hundred year-old ancient capital of Thailand, by using the architecture itself and the surroundings as a tourist magnet.

A single story building intermingling among existing large trees, The building is 9 meters in height and 11 meters equally in width and length made entirely from steel-enforced plywood. Within the building, four platforms are placed in various heights so each has its own view of the Chao Phraya river. Five spiral staircase located at each platform for the purpose of circulation. The wine bar and tables are situated on the ground floor, platforms and spiral staircases serve as observation decks.

The steel-enforced plywood structure of the building is inspired from locally found wooden houses. The knock down waffle structure system which is visually light but structurally strong are being exposed by the design of floor, wall and roof. In addition, the walls can be a light filter that helps cool down and soften the atmosphere of the interior space.

In this building plywood, a material normally used for interior purposes such as furniture structure and decorative walls, are being used as the building structure. This has broaden the potential and transform the perception of plywood from a temporary material to a long lasting and mind blowing edifice.

All five spiral staircases are designed not only for to suit the limited spaces but also serve as the building's structural supports. Furthermore, familiarly experienced scale and amount of spiral staircases has been sculpt into an unfamiliar new space arousing visitors the sense of abstract.

The building is protected from rain and humidity by coating it with resin and covering the building with one millimeter thick PVC sheets. From the exterior, the wavy reflects of PVC sheets visually soften the building, in the meantime, exposed the interior through its clearness.

Crossing the limits of structure, material and scale leads to an architecture that unifies all. This is the purpose of building The Wine Ayutthaya, to revive the liveliness of Ayutthaya once again.
