DESIGN NARRATIVE:
With a small site that sits between Ploenchit Road (Bangkok's busiest retail thoroughfare) and the 600,000sqm CentralWorld (the world's 3rd largest shopping center), the challenge of this project was one of balancing contending identities, scales and contextual attitudes. The intent was to capture the atmospheric vibrancy of European cafe culture and the energy and intimacy of Bangkok's many Soi's (urban alleys) to define a new contemporary Soi culture of sophisticated outdoor dining and lively pedestrian streets. With 4,000sqm of enclosed boutique retail and 8,000sqm of restaurants and bars facing an open-air protected courtyard the project creates a relaxed and intimate urban oasis internally while maintaining a captivating exterior identity to match the intensity of Bangkok’s urban condition.

The massing of the building extends the circulatory paths of the existing CentralWorld shopping center and CPN tower and connects them to the adjacent Ploenchit Road and BTS Skywalk through a series of shifted masses. These masses are fused together with a monochromatic aluminum facade.

The facade serves as the graphic identity of the building through a back-lit aluminum composite facade that is articulated with gradient pulses of CNC milled perforations. The interior of the building is revealed as the facade is peeled away to expose a bespoke timber trim. The timber lining continues into the interiors as a series of rippling timber ceiling features.

Internally the building makes use of a protected open-air naturally ventilated courtyard, reducing energy consumption considerably. An open air trellis allows air to flow through the internal courtyard and provides the effect of dappled light which filters through it to protect from the sun while allowing outdoor experience, ambient lighting and atmospheric effects. The trellis is fitted with a retractable canopy that allows for extra protection from rain and sun.

The design of the project capitalizes on passive solutions for integrated sustainability, rather than the application of active mechanisms.

The open-air interior courtyard offers a sheltered atrium space to relax and feel the breeze circulating through the large openings. The natural cross-ventilation flows from one open-air entrance to the next, bringing in low cool air while dissipating heat through the open skylight.
A retractable roof allows for controlled daylighting and weather protection over the interior courtyard space. The two glass-covered skylights serve to harvest natural daylight. By bringing in the direct sunlight into the vertical circulation atria, daylight is then distributed into the adjoining spaces. This reduces the need for electrical lighting.

Curriculum

Synthesis is an award-winning contemporary design practice exploring design at the intersection of Performance, Technology and Craft. Challenged with the mission to explore and redefine the relationship between form and performance, the office explores methods of informing design through technological means. The design trajectory and ethos of the office is rooted in balancing both the experimental and the visionary with the practical and the pragmatic to achieve the extraordinary.
