Fiorentina Football Club’s “Campini” training grounds near Florence’s Franchi stadium has been recently upgraded. Architect Stefano Mencucci’s brief was to create a complex that would group all club training and technical requirements on one, easy-to-access site. The plot, a long strip of land, is surrounded on three sides by playing fields. The new programme provided for the renovation and conversion of two existing buildings that face each other on the long sides of the plot, and the construction of a new multipurpose building at the end of the site. This would create a sort of wide inner court to be partly planted with trees. The two renovated buildings are going to house administrative offices, pressrooms and other service areas. The new multipurpose building has a fully equipped gym with massage and physiotherapy rooms, doctor’s office, specialist physical rehabilitation gym, dressing rooms, toilets and two relaxation areas with adjoining café and restrooms, one of them on the mezzanine floor reserved for team players. Care was taken to ensure consistency throughout by using the same materials for both renovation and new build. The new building nonetheless stands out for the large glazed lights that give occupants broad views over the nearby football pitches, and its curved roof with glulam beams by Holzbau. Promo was involved from the design stage in the development and construction of the roof with Riverclack cladding, of the 29 structural pillars with custom-designed brackets to support the glulam beams and also the steel and glass canopy on the south-facing façade of the gym building that reaches out to the building opposite and the nearby internal road. Promo was also involved in the design and installation of the pebble-dash insulated infill panels, the glazed internal partitions, the partly-operable thermal-break Schüco glazed façades, the mezzanine floor metal frame as well as the metal staircase to the area reserved for players.
