Extension of the CTLES

Antonini Darmon Architects
Extension of an existing building designed by Dominique Perrault, this project is intended to archive documents from the libraries of universities and research centers in the Paris region, as well as from the French National Library.
The first CTLES building imposes a strong identity on the site. The logic of the layout and the architectural style constitute a harmonious and appropriate whole; the building sequences and the creation of the internal road give the site its structure.

Maintaining the consistency and integrity of the existing building, our addition represents a natural extension, but detached to avoid distorting the original structure.
To ensure proper conservation of the archives, the easy flow of documents and ease for the user, the project relies on three major functional principles: Two silo buildings to conserve the document collections (100 linear kilometers of shelves), served by a central gallery with natural light and open on the landscape, secured by an enveloping skin bringing together all the technical requirements on the periphery. From the point of view of both implementation and architectural expression, the extension works in continuity with existing building.

Again taking metal as the sole material, the extension is covered in veined stainless steel; its brightness contrasts with the dullness of the original aluminum.
Reflecting its environment, stainless steel metamorphoses the image of the building. Undulating and reflective, the exterior facade vibrates with the outside; it evolves during the day and through the seasons according to natural daylight and artificial lighting at night. Faceted by folds, it decomposes the landscape in a kinetic effect to sometimes make the building disappear.
An invisible architecture to symbolize the knowledge stored within the building, a place of memory whose cultural richness goes beyond the simple technical function.

Our design is founded on three interrelated sustainability themes:
QUALITY OF SITE INSERTION
From a functional and architectural point of view, the extension is designed in perfect continuity with the existing structure. Interior circulation of the building is drawn in the continuity of the existing corridors. As the building is set into the ground, the heights of the two structures are almost aligned.
In terms of materials, the extension uses metal cladding, in harmony with the existing building, but with a different interpretation. The mirrored aspect permits the building to reflect and disappear into its surroundings.

PRACTICALITY OF USE
The well-being of the users was essential in the extension’s design. With the exception of the storage spaces, the personnel areas are generously naturally lighted.
In the archive areas, the structural elements do not disturb the circulation of the personnel with their carts. The general volume is dictated by the optimization of the corridors: minimizing horizontal distances and improving the position and dimensions of the vertical cores.

BIOCLIMATIC DESIGN
The bioclimatic design consists in finding a harmonious equilibrium between the climate, the practices and the behavior of the workers to reduce heating needs. Therefore, the building has been designed in the following manner:
- Two compact independent blocks with high thermal inertia
- Creation of an ecological pond for plant and animal biodiversity.
- Garden for the enjoyment of the workers
- Adding and diversifying trees around the plot
- Use of materials with a low grey energy guarantee and simplified construction
- Geothermal heating: with no cost this solution brings ¾ of the necessary calories in winter and 2/3 of the necessary frigories in summer.
-Facilitated use of heating system with remote parameter setting
-Facilitated maintenance due to the placement of technical infrastructure in the periphery of the structure

Curriculum

We founded Antonini Darmon Architects in Paris in 2006. Our creative system was born from the partnership of two complementary yet different personalities. We aim to propose an original architectural interpretation, where each project follows a path having its own identity and dynamics.
Our approach is inspired by the will to create intimate living quarters which interact with the outside world.
Our aim is to develop contextual, sober, creative architecture that takes full account of the issues and problems – economic, social, political – underlying the urban reality.
Downtown, metropolitan areas, suburbs, new neighborhoods: we engage with the diversity of sites and all the possible ways to make a city in the 21st century. Antidotes to pessimism, our projects fit their context; their building systems, their types, their uses, their materials are always appropriate. Representing a dialogue with the city, our buildings are open to the world, user-friendly and indexed to the future.
