Bios is a fully-glazed full thickness porcelain stoneware tile series harnessing research conducted by Casalgrande Padana in liaison with the micro-biology section of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. During manufacture mineral particles are added to the ceramic mix causing an antibacterial reaction that is 99.9% effective in knocking out the four main bacterial strains found in closed environments: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bios remains effectively antibacterial in time, it has no need of light to trigger its action, while the presence of damp only increases the beneficial effect. Such performance ensures Bios will have a wide range of applications in the home and wherever hygiene, cleanability, safety and ease of upkeep are at a premium: health units, research and analysis laboratories, schools for the young, swimming pools, sports facilities, wellness centres, canteens, restaurants, the agricultural foodstuff industry and its outlets. Available throughout the Granitogres and Marmogres series, Bios lends itself to decorative composition effects with its range of finishes, colours and formats. Another advantage of its having antibacterial particles in the tile biscuit and not just on the surface is that the Bios series can be had in natural, polished or matt versions, thereby meeting all requirements.
