Tree of Life. Mapei

Mapei has participated in the project

For Expo 2015, Mapei has supplied materials and technology to the companies building the national and cluster pavilions, the service buildings and the various internal roads and pathways.

Mapei was also involved in the construction of the Tree of Life, the centrepiece of the Lake Arena near Palazzo Italia that was built by the “Orgoglio Brescia” consortium and based on an idea by Marco Balich. Rising 35 m high, this steel and wood structure is surrounded by fountains that draw ideas from the Italian Renaissance and especially the diamond-shaped patterns that Michelangelo adopted for Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome.

Throughout the day and night, over one hundred special effects bring the tree to life, providing Expo visitors with a near continuous light and music show.

Mapei brought its expertise to creating the base for the structure. First, the prefabricated elements that form this base were glued into place using Mapewrap Primer 1 and Adesilex PG1 Rapido adhesive. The substrate was levelled with Primer 3296 and then Adesilex P4, a levelling compound. This substrate was then waterproofed with Mapelastic Turbo mortar and reinforced with Mapetex SEL, a micro-perforated polypropylene non-woven fabric. For the stones used to clad the base, Elastorapid cement-based adhesive was used and then the grouting was done with Ultracolor Plus, a high performance grouting with DropEffect® waterproofing technology and BioBlock® anti-mould protection. Finally, the expansion joints were sealed with Mapefoam, a closed-cell expanded polyethylene foam cord, and Mapeflex PU20, a two-component, self-levelling polyurethane sealant.
