Sunshading is not only essential to ensure visual and climatic comfort in a building, but also to improve insulation and cut consumption. Pellini shading systems are divided into various divisions - Tende e Sistemi, ScreenLine® and Pellini Nautica - to cater for an array of sectors.

The company’s products have recently been used in some of the major new urban developments in Milan, notably the Allianz Tower in the City Life complex and the Unicredit Towers in Porta Nuova.

The Allianz Tower, designed by Arata Isozaki and Andrea Maffei, is the first of three office blocks planned for the City Life centre. The other two have been designed by Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind. Inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s Endless Column, the tower rises fifty floors, including 46 for offices. The façade comprises an overlapping series of modules rising six floors, in a potentially endless pattern. Each module is covered with a double skin glazed envelope that curves outwards slightly.

The interior was designed to allow great flexibility of layout. The approach to the façade combined with modular installations makes it easy to switch from an open-space solution to closed offices.

The shading system included the installation of nearly 4,000 MAO P35 blinds with micro-perforated 35-mm aluminium slats operated by a 230V dc motor and aligned using steel guide cables (each blind is 3.6 m high).

The Unicredit Towers, designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, are part of the redevelopment of the Porta Nuova-Garibaldi area to create the Milan Business Centre.

The complex has LEED Gold certification. The Towers are characterised by the curved nature of the reflective glazing that plays with the light, creating interesting dynamics between the towers and with the surrounding buildings. To optimise energy efficiency all offices and meeting rooms have internal roller blinds made using Verosol® EnviroScreen G2 802/000 fabric (both manual and motorised versions were installed). Such metallised screens are highly reflective and 100% recyclable, with Öko-Tex and Greenguard certification. They were also given an anti-bacterial treatment.
