The old Parish Church of San Donato in Polenta was built in the 10th century in Bertinoro in the modern-day province of Forlì-Cesena. The building was recently restored and reinforced using a plan by Roberto Pistolesi. Mapei supplied its products and technical know-how free of charge. The project involved repairing sections, earthquake proofing the structure, re-plastering the interior and then restoring and relaying the terracotta floor. The first step was to ensure the walls supported the roof properly, fixing the areas where serious cracks had opened. A Mapegrid G 220 fibreglass mesh with Planitop HDM Restauro mortar was used to do this. Then, holes were created so that a special fibre - Mapewrap S Fiocco - could be used to strengthen the structure. The largest gaps in the walls were then “stitched” together using Carbotube, a carbon fibre tube, before Mape-Antique was injected. To fix the rising damp damage, Mape-Antique was used, applying Mape-Antique Rinzaffo and Mape-Antique MC up to 2m high and then, above this, Mape-Antique Intonaco NHL. Next, all the repaired areas were covered with Mape-Antique Fc Civile, a fine-grained lime and Eco-Pozzolan transparent skimming mortar. The restored terracotta paving was then laid with Adesilex P9 and grouted with Keracolor FF. The next stage will focus on improving the exterior walls and the top of the bell tower.
