TRAM STOP COMFORT AND PROTECTION THROUGH LIGHT
By Editorial Staff -

This new tram stop in Berlin is on Europaplatz, the square on the northern side of the main train station. It is a hub in the expansion of the entire urban tram network in the German capital. The design by Gruber + Popp Architekten combines shape, materials and lighting in an elegant, dynamic project. Two lightweight concrete shell roofs resemble giant wings protecting passengers and the snaking tram tracks. These two cantilevered roofs are lowest in the central section of the platform, where they sit directly on the roof of small volume, but then rise towards the further reaches of the platform, eventually soaring to 4.90 m. The choice of material was essential in achieving the formal and aesthetic goals of the project. As such, LC 45/50 concrete was used, as it has lightweight sand and expanded clay aggregates, making it 35% lighter than normal concrete. At the thinnest point the two concrete roofs, extending 58 m long and 6 m wide, are only 7 cm thick. The tram stop is minimalist, with only a few other defining elements: the two sets of tram tracks between the platforms, with the shelter roofs, and low walls that separate the stop from street traffic. Two flights of steps lead down to an underground passageway connected to the train and subway stations. The lighting design for the tram stop focused on user comfort in combination with a sense of safety and security, regardless of the time of day. This is where Bega’s lighting devices came to the fore, providing light levels exceeding regulatory requirements. The sides of the stairways are lit by round recessed wall luminaires, providing soft, glare-free light for passengers. The low walls between the stop and the road have recessed rectangular wall luminaires that cast a shielded, completely glare-free light to create a pleasantly lit sensation for waiting passengers. The area next to the tracks is lit by round downlights placed on the roofs to provide uniform illumination across the platforms.
